Summary

Alcohol Explained is the definitive, ground-breaking guide to alcohol and alcoholism。 It explains how alcohol affects human beings on a chemical, physiological and psychological level, from those first drinks right up to chronic alcoholism。 Alcoholism and problem drinking seems illogical to those on the outside, indeed it is equally perplexing for the alcoholic or problem drinker。 This book provides a logical, easy to follow explanation of the phenomenon and detailed instructions on how to beat it。 Despite being entirely scientific and factual in nature the book is presented in an accessible and easily understandable format。For more information and to read the first 5 chapters for free please visit www。alcoholexplained。com

"This is an excellent book written by an inquisitive and educated author who during a period of his life suffered from alcoholism。 The book explains in an easily understood language the various effects that alcohol has on our body。 In my opinion the text would serve as a great handbook not only for those struggling with alcohol but also medical students as part of their education。 I am sure some of my own patients troubled with alcoholism in recent years could have benefitted from reading William's book and I will be recommending it going forward。"

If anyone is thinking about changing their relationship with Alcohol this book is a must read! It is the best I have read in the quit lit genre。 William Porter seems to have done the research here and provides good explainations as to why we drink and why it is so hard to stop but also provides good methods to follow to help make stopping so much easier。I found this a very thought provoking read and found myself relating to many of the chapters in this book。 I haven't drank alcohol for 10 months If anyone is thinking about changing their relationship with Alcohol this book is a must read! Excellent。。。another way of looking at alcohol and its impact。 You have to be ready to read this without defensiveness。 Highly recommend if you can't subscribe to AA's approach。 Excellent。。。another way of looking at alcohol and its impact。 You have to be ready to read this without defensiveness。 Highly recommend if you can't subscribe to AA's approach。 。。。more

I was hoping this would be a more scientific book, but it tracks closely with other memoirs of ex-drinkers who did some research and want to share their experiences。 I preferred Quit Like a Woman instead, probably because it was written by an American woman whose experiences more closely mirror my own。

A really interesting and practical read for anyone who drinks alcohol in any amount!

This book is mostly based on the personal experiences of the author and does not feel like written by a professional。 It is not based on scientific studies or evidence backed up by studies carried out。 it's not much of a medical guide。 It's repetitive and not very well researched still a good enough book 。 The explains explains a bit of alcohol chemistry: how it's poisonous and human body is naturally repulsed by it。 Alcohol itself doesn't taste good; it's toxic in pure form and can be lethal ( This book is mostly based on the personal experiences of the author and does not feel like written by a professional。 It is not based on scientific studies or evidence backed up by studies carried out。 it's not much of a medical guide。 It's repetitive and not very well researched still a good enough book 。 The explains explains a bit of alcohol chemistry: how it's poisonous and human body is naturally repulsed by it。 Alcohol itself doesn't taste good; it's toxic in pure form and can be lethal (if 'taste' is the reason to drink)。 The taste of alcoholic drinks comes from strong flavors added to it。 Alcohol doesn't "relieve" frustration, anger and misery; it just anesthetizes our body systems for a while and makes the situation far worse when effects of alcohol start to wear off。 Why a drinker might crave alcohol and get addicted to it。 There's a guide to stages of alcoholism and how to stop drinking in the end。I could get some information about the subject though it would've been better of there was some scientific/medical evidence included ( since I wasn't reading it for 'self-help' purposes)。 I cannoy say if or how effective/helpful a guide is this book for alcoholics to stop drinking。 Though it would be a good and somewhat enlightening read for people who are tempted to drink as the reality is not as glamorous and enjoyable as it may seem in TV, movies & pictures on social media。There were some points that required medical/biological evidence。 For example, he writes that our body fulfills a certain nutrient's deficiency by making us fancy some foods (containing that nutrient) over others。 I haven't heard or read that in any book before and the author doesn't tell if it's a theory or there's some sort of biological evidence to support it。2。5 stars 。。。more

Save Yourselves The Misery Of Finding Out The Hard WayHaving recently noticed that I wasn't my old self and that a lot seemed to be going wrong all if a sudden alcohol became a suspect。 Much like the author I undertook an analytical process where I was more mindful of alcohol and started to discover。 I decided to quit but kept relapsing, it had got it claws into me, quietly, over time。 I needed more information to get me past what I could not quite see and found it in this book。 It doesn't get 5 Save Yourselves The Misery Of Finding Out The Hard WayHaving recently noticed that I wasn't my old self and that a lot seemed to be going wrong all if a sudden alcohol became a suspect。 Much like the author I undertook an analytical process where I was more mindful of alcohol and started to discover。 I decided to quit but kept relapsing, it had got it claws into me, quietly, over time。 I needed more information to get me past what I could not quite see and found it in this book。 It doesn't get 5 stars because nothing is perfect but if I'm still dry next year I'll return and give it another star。 。。。more

It’s an enlightened read shortly after my last relationship ruined by alcohol。 Remove one star as the same points get repeated again and again。1。 Basically alcohol is anesthetic and depressant。 2。 Our subconscious mistakenly associates its “relaxing” effects at social occasions and anesthetic effect at stressed and unhappy times。 3。 Alcohol takes the wrong credits。 4。 Because alcohol is toxin and depressant, our brains secretes stimulants (my understanding is something similar to caffeine and st It’s an enlightened read shortly after my last relationship ruined by alcohol。 Remove one star as the same points get repeated again and again。1。 Basically alcohol is anesthetic and depressant。 2。 Our subconscious mistakenly associates its “relaxing” effects at social occasions and anesthetic effect at stressed and unhappy times。 3。 Alcohol takes the wrong credits。 4。 Because alcohol is toxin and depressant, our brains secretes stimulants (my understanding is something similar to caffeine and stress hormone cortisol, author never established what are those stimulants) to counter the effects of alcohol, when alcohol wears off, we wake up feeling anxious and nervous due to the remaining effects of stimulants。 5。 Over time, our brain and body becomes so efficient at countering the effects of alcohol by secreting stimulants。 Even after you stop drinking 10 or 50 years, when you eventually takes the one drink your body already anticipates this wouldn’t be the last and secrets more stimulants you can handle (more depressed, anxious, nervous, worrying)。 The only way to get rid of the unpleasant feeling is to take more alcohol。 6。 Alcohol also disrupts sleep, especially REM sleep (dream sleep)。 In studies, animal died when deprived of dream sleep。7。 Alcohol also causes obesity。 As it’s an energy, it cannot be converted and stored as fat。 When you eat and drink at the same time, alcohol will be used as energy source first and the food you ate will be converted into fats for storage。 。。。more

A book for someone trying to quit the habit, focusing on the psychological effects of alcohol and addiction。

Very straightforward and helpful This book is ideal for someone wanting to understand why they drink and to help them quit。 It doesn't necessarily set out out to stop you drinking, it's just that when you read it, everything falls into place and you begin to recognise your own behaviour。Highly recommended! I think I did learn a few things from this book that will be beneficial to my health, but the entire thing came across as somewhat propaganda-y。 I understand why one might take this approach with a subject matter like this (e。g。, helping people walk away from a dangerous substance), but it doesn't work for me and reduces the trust I have in the content。 I also expected a little more about the long-term physical effects caused by alcohol abuse, but this book is pretty focused on the short term。 S I think I did learn a few things from this book that will be beneficial to my health, but the entire thing came across as somewhat propaganda-y。 I understand why one might take this approach with a subject matter like this (e。g。, helping people walk away from a dangerous substance), but it doesn't work for me and reduces the trust I have in the content。 I also expected a little more about the long-term physical effects caused by alcohol abuse, but this book is pretty focused on the short term。 Still, I think the book could be a helpful tool for someone that is interested in quitting。 。。。more

Informative book on how alcohol affects your system。 Glad I read it。But for future editions, I hope the author finds a better editor, as his favorite and most repeated word (perhaps used more often than the word alcohol), was "however"。 Maybe this grated on me since I just overcame a mountain of grading so my grammardar is extra sensitive? Or because I listened as an audiobook and couldn't skim over these conjunctive adverbs? An excellent step by step guide to better understand alcohol and its negative affect on usAn easy to read and understand book about the very real downside of drinking alcohol。 Every drinker and recently stopped drinker should read this book。

Maggie Schrock

The content was interesting and there are some good nuggets of information related to the effects of alcohol。 That said, it was terribly written in terms of grammar, run on sentences and frequent rambling。 There is even a section in the book where a whole paragraph is repeated on the next page, unintentionally。 I also wish there would’ve been more information on the source material。

Andrew

A good helpful bookEasy to read, helpful and insightful with simple recommendations。 Improves understanding of alcohol, its effect on the body and mind。

I could not get past that there are no citations or references whatsoever。 There is no way to know where he gets his science or what is his opinion or experience。 It feels like an amateur publication。

Good, scary read。 I wanted something that details the health effects of long-term drinking (moderate or heavy)。 This delivers。 It was fairly repetitive, and the lack of sources was grating, but it was fast and detailed and memorable。

Brilliant book! This book has really opened my eyes。 I have been an angst ridden individual for years and I never put it down to drinking! I am also a bit overweight。 57 days now and I haven’t had a drink。 57 days and I haven’t missed it, not even over Christmas and New Year! I am determined to continue but I don’t think it will take much determination as I am committed! AmazingI have had a hard time fighting drink for years wishing I could give it up or control it rather than it controlling me this book has given me the answers to help kick the drink for good rather than just a day week or month as I thought that if I could give drink up for a time I could control it and only drink 1 and stop but now I understand that that is never going to happen many thanks for the heads up
